Acrylic on Canvas, 91x122cm, 2017. Shaun Keaveny’s voice on BBC 6music was unusually subdued in the morning of January 16th 2016 as my radio came to life at 7am. David Bowie had died, just a couple of days after his 69th birthday and the release of his remarkable swansong ‘Blackstar’. My painting shows the site where he stood on the cover of the iconic 1972 record The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, as it looked a few days after his death. The location had been on my list of sites of cultural importance to paint for a long time, and it took on an extra level of poignancy as it was transformed into a makeshift shrine, fans from all over the world leaving their messages of confusion, grief and love. The painting took over a year to complete.
